Fort Ross in the News

Victor Vekselberg of Renova Group of Companies visited Fort Ross in late June to pledge his support for our park. Later that day Mr. Vekselberg, President Medvedev, and Governor Schwarzenegger signed a memorandum of understanding between our countries in support of Fort Ross. FRIA, whose mission is to promote educational and interpretive activities at Fort Ross and Salt Point State Parks,  is particularly excited about this unprecedented opportunity for funding. FRIA's goal is to work conscientiously with Renova to identify and pursue projects beneficial to our park that neither California State Parks nor FRIA can currently fund. It promises to be an exciting few years. Click here for SFGate and Press Democrat coverage.

To Our Local Friends of Fort Ross

FRIA would like to extend our warmest thanks to all community members, donors, and local businesses who have supported us this past year. It's always good to work with one's neighbors on the ground, and we look forward to strengthening these ties.

We would like to give a special mention to our local vineyards--Hellenthal, Hirsch, Fort Ross Winery, Wild Hog--for their generous donations, as well as to the Timber Cove Inn, The Sea Ranch &  Fort Ross Lodge.

Fire at Salt Point!

An early morning fire at the Salt Point rangers' station on May 29 has caused a near-total loss to an important resource for park enthusiasts: Five offices containing important computers, photo archives, books, binoculars, printers, copiers, laminators, and office furniture were destroyed. Losing these critical items erodes the ability of park staff to help visitors enjoy the park. FRIA is fundraising to provide field guides and books; binoculars and kids' tide pool backpacks; computers, copiers, and printers, to help get the interpretive staff back on their feet.

Proposition 21, The State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Fund Act of 2010, is on the November Ballot

FRIA heartily endorses Prop 21, the State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund Act of 2010, the ballot measure that would add an $18 annual surcharge on vehicle license fees and give licensed vehicles and occupants free day use admission to all California State Parks throughout the year. Prop 21 would create a stable, reliable, and adequate source of funding for the state park system and for wildlife conservation.  For more information or to help get this initiative passed in the November elections, go to  www.calparks.org/takeaction.
